Mononoke are spirits of Japanese folklore, enigmatic presences that were once blamed for illness, calamity, and the unexplainable. But viewed another way, these spirits of strong emotion and extraordinary experiences remind us that the self is not entirely in control. Forces such as Madness, Desire, and Death have always been part of the world; we cannot escape them, only learn to live side by side. Forest of Mononoke calls these beings into the gallery as glowing, vibrantly-colored sculptures of laser-cut acrylic, suspended in midair. They are illuminated through custom lighting elements to create projected shadows that flicker and warp along the walls, materializing the unseen things that lie within the forest. On select evenings, Peter Mercury ventures into the forest of light and shadow in a devised narrative performance that sees them follow a glitch in the boundary between worlds.
