The four artists in this exhibition draw on material, political, magical, and cosmological acts of interference, drawing down forces in tension through each of their practices. As one of the most widely-circulated concepts in esoterica and spirituality, the phrase “as above, so below” expresses the fundamental relationship between the macrocosm—the universe, the heavens, the realms of the gods—and the microcosms of earthly beings. But it also holds the tension inherent to continuums: what, exactly, separates above and below? Through mixed-media sculpture, video performance, and a newly-commissioned installation, the works on view invite us to explore how we both honor and manipulate the divisions between earth and sky.
